Speaking art, not English

Event Description

Fantasy is another way to exist; it is a place too overwhelming for comfort.

This is not from a point of condescension or aloofness, but more so from one of humility and respect. To feel that one understands too much and may possess an uncanny sense of wisdom is misguided.

Therefore, step back and draw from the mundane; some magic, a little whimsy, and spice it with a touch of dark cynicism.

I have here - left the art of title writing aside and trust the viewer to be equally capable of fantasizing and criticism.

For you are in your heads, and I am sharing mine.

About Craig Müller

Craig Müller (born 1969, Pretoria, South Africa) is a visual artist whose practice spans sculpture—particularly in metal—ink on paper drawings, and acrylic paintings on board.

Having studied Fine Art at the former Pretoria Technikon (now T.U.T.) he established a reputation through commissioned decorative installations and sculptural furniture for private residences up to around 2008.

Müller’s work is described as combining humour, intellect and a vibrant – sometimes mischievous – view of objects, animals and machines. He often invents hybrid creatures or mechanical-fantasy forms that challenge the viewer’s perception of the world.

He uses non-reproducible, hand-directed techniques (for example working directly on canvas or paper, or joining metals and wood) to create works unique in their process.

The Viewing Room Art Gallery, established in Pretoria in 2007, is a contemporary space dedicated to showcasing both emerging and established artists. The gallery offers a unique experience by blending art with architecture. Visitors are immersed in an exceptional architectural environment, where the design of the space itself complements and elevates the art on display. With a double-story layout, the gallery regularly hosts multiple exhibitions, creating a dynamic and ever-evolving cultural experience unlike any other. Under the direction of Lucy Anastasiadis, the gallery also draws from her extensive background in fashion, providing a creative, multidisciplinary approach to curating. Lucy analyzes each work of art with the same attention to detail and vision she once applied to fashion, making the exhibitions visually compelling and intellectually engaging. Though St. Lorient's fashion chapter has closed, Lucy remains dedicated to promoting the arts. The Viewing Room continues to offer a platform for both national and international artists, ensuring that visitors experience a fusion of art, architecture, and innovation in every exhibition.
